Who Fought the Last Mayor
Session: 2022-10-19
The next page opens in a fight. Only its first exchange is written down: one strike fell just short against armor made to turn energy, another landed, and a third went through armor made to turn steel. The journal does not say who was fought, or where, or how it ended.
Burn first. Count after.
— the Cycle, II.1
He kept the strike that fell short beside the two that landed. The deeds speak, even the near ones.
The crew broke into the city's system. The journal does not say whose hands did it. The system was laid out in parts. The part that ran the city's industry was corrupt, and its code crashed and looped back on itself.
A fire that feeds only on itself turns, and does not rise.
— the Cycle, II.6
The part that kept the city's arts still held names: operas, artists, songs. He wrote down that they were there. He did not write down the names.
Old light is faint. It is still light.
— the Cycle, I.8
The part that kept its government opened as a hologram of an official room, a celebration of Istamak's government. So the city had a name. In that room they fought "the last mayor."
Who stood in the hall of Istamak's honor, and fought the last mayor.
— the Long Names, Zigu, 20
Burn, and do not ask the dark for thanks.
— the Cycle, II.2
He gave the mayor quotation marks and nothing else. I do not know what he fought there. I know he fought it.
Among the things they found was a flat crystal, shaped like a triangle. There was also a round device with leather straps, made to be worn on an arm or a pack. It was a null-space chamber, and it held more than its size: an upgrade to quicken armor, a fusion seal that carries a shock, a short scattergun with sixteen shells, and two thousand credits.
Who opened the chamber that held more than its size.
— the Long Names, Zigu, 21
Light given is not light lost.
— the Cycle, II.5
The chief of the city's security told them of a terminal at the foundry, a physical one, that held the key code for all of the doors. He also gave part of a router address, enough to identify the server. The journal does not say what the chief of security was.
One fire calls another out of the dark.
— the Cycle, II.3
Then on to the House of Renewal. A sun symbol stretched across its double doors. Inside were tables and dusty furniture, and murals: broken limbs, dark halos, people suffering from afflictions of the mind. The journal stops there.
Who came to the House of Renewal, under the sun on its doors.
— the Long Names, Zigu, 22
A star does not choose what its light falls on.
— the Cycle, II.7
He wrote Murals? with the only question mark on the page. He saw what was painted there, and marked it.
