Who Came Down at the Lichen Farm

Session: 2023-02-22

68

The journal takes up again at a corridor that was blocked. Bren was able to get through. The journal does not say what blocked it, where it ran, or how the crew came there from the foundry's fallen wall.

Who found the way shut, and saw Bren pass through.

— the Long Names, Zigu, 28

Where one light cannot pass, another may.

— the Cycle, II.9

He wrote that Bren got through, not that he did. He put the deed where it belonged.

69

Then one line: Escaped the building. It does not say which building, or what held them there.

Who came out of the shut house, and was not held.

— the Long Names, Zigu, 29

A fire that is penned does not stay penned.

— the Cycle, II.10

70

They came down at the lichen farm. After that they stood on a street north-west of the spaceport. The journal does not say what carried them down, or why the farm.

Who came down at the lichen farm.

— the Long Names, Zigu, 30

71

There the Herald told them of a side entrance, one they could use with a key. The journal does not say who the Herald was, or which building the entrance served.

Who was told of the side way, that a key would open.

— the Long Names, Zigu, 31

Light carries what it carries. It does not promise to be read.

— the Cycle, I.10

He gave Herald a capital, as a name or a title. I cannot tell which, and I will not guess.

72

Under his own name he listed boots. Plain and gray outside, lined inside with the fur of eohi, which he called monkey wolves. He wrote down what they gave: once in a day, a run at full stride that still ends in every blow he has. And what they took: each blow less sure, and his guard open until he could set it again.

Who took the boots lined with the fur of the eohi.

— the Long Names, Zigu, 32

Once in a day, run, and strike with all you have.
Know the cost before you pay it.
The aim loosens. The guard opens.
(Zigu, from his journal.)

— the Forms, Form 36, later additions

He wrote the cost down beside the gift, in the same hand. He did not take the one without the other.

73

And a bow: an advanced battle bow, made seeking, so that what it looses finds its mark. The journal says he got it. It does not say from whom. The page ends with the boots and the bow.

Who took up the bow whose arrows seek.

— the Long Names, Zigu, 33

A star does not choose what its light falls on.

— the Cycle, II.7

A star does not choose. This arrow does. I mark the difference and leave it there.
